We know how frustrating appliance problems can be, especially when they supply critical water to the dishwasher and laundry. Water heaters might be the most crucial equipment in any home. Many homes have water heaters that are not performing to their full potential. They have not been properly maintained and often produce very limited hot water. Minor repairs and maintenance can address water heater issues as well as prolong the life of water heaters.
There are several types of water heaters. Tank type water heaters are the most common. Tank type heaters can be either gas or electricity. They consist of a vessel or container that keeps water continuously hot and ready to use. Typical sizes for household vary upon how many fixtures, but most homes have either a 40 or 50 gallon. Due to new energy efficient laws all tank type water heaters will be 2-3” wider and taller. This could be a concern for some home owners who have heaters located in attics or other locations with limited space. New laws also limit the size of the new tank type water heaters. All heaters that are larger than 55 gallons must be either hybrid or tank-less water heaters.
TANKLESS WATER HEATERS
Tankless water heaters have become increasingly popular. Many home owners and businesses have chosen tank-less water heaters over tank type due to they are much more efficient and there are often rebates available. (currently SCE&G offers a $200 rebate) Unlike tank type water heaters tankless only heat water up on demand saving energy and money. These water heaters instantly heat water as it flows through the device, and do not retain any water internally except for what is in the heat exchanger coil. Tankless are often a better option due they are much smaller and can be installed indoor and outdoor. Most tankless water heaters are either natural gas or propane.
HYBRID WATER HEATERS
Hybrid water heaters are another option which is a tank type paired with a heat pump that extracts heat from the surrounding air and uses it to help heat the water. These water heaters are much more efficient than electric water heaters and most effective in warmer climates. (Efficient only when installed in a minimum of 700 sq ft space indoors)
